Volta launches state of the art, ultra-low latency data centre at Great Sutton Street, London EC1

London, 18th April 2012: Volta, the specialist provider of data centres to the financial, media and content industries, has revealed plans for its first data centre in Central London. The data centre, which will be based in the iconic former Reuters building in Great Sutton Street EC1, is ideally located in close proximity to the City and Silicon Roundabout to house businesses utilising latency-sensitive services.

Backed by all equity funding from funds managed by Apollo Global Management, LLC's (NYSE: APO) real estate group, Apollo Global Real Estate Management and Glebe London Limited Partnership, Volta takes ownership of the site in June 2012. The data centre will be fully operational from January 2013 following a complete refurbishment where the latest state of the art equipment will be installed. Great Sutton Street will offer flexible data centre space tailored to individual business needs including co-location and private caged data suite options.

The 8,500 m² stand-alone data centre will have the most resilient data centre power supply available in Central London being connected to two 33kv substations. This is what I had suspected for a long time. I had suspected that Cloud losing its Value Proposition and Cloud is for Flexibility and NOT for cost saving. However, I did not have research data to support my claim. Now I have supporting evidence from Byung Chul Tak, Bhuvan Urgaonkar, and Anand Sivasubramainam from Pennsylvania State University who have published a paper titled “To Move or Not to Move: The Economics of Cloud Computing”. The paper attempts to calculate the economics of moving to the cloud over a period of ten years. The tests assumed that hardware and software would be refreshed every four years.
